To communicate with a Wi-Fi network, a device must identify itself to the network using a unique network address called a media access control (MAC) address. If the device always uses the same Wi-Fi MAC address across all networks, network operators and other network observers can more easily relate that address to the device's network activity and location over time. This allows a kind of user tracking or profiling, and it applies to all devices on all Wi-Fi networks.

To reduce this privacy risk, iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and watchOS 7 use a different MAC address for each Wi-Fi network. This unique, static MAC address is your device's private Wi-Fi address for that network only.

My iPad's MAC address seems to have changed with the iPadOS 14 update. Ask Question Asked yesterday. Active yesterday. Viewed 30 times 1. I was looking at my Ubiquiti UniFi controller webpage and noticed that my iPad Pro 10.5 was seen as a new device. I went to the Insights tab and saw that it has two entries, with two different. Are you talking about the iPad's IP address, or your IP address once you have connected to the internet? Your IP address with your ISP can only be changed by them. The iPad's IP address, internal to your network, is easier. There are two ways to g. Warning: Do this at your own risk. I cannot be held liable for your actions. MAC Address or media access control address is a unique ID assigned to network interface cards (NICs). It is also known as a physical or hardware address. It identifies the hardware manufacturer and is used for network communication between devices in a network segment. MAC Address usually consists of six groups of two hexadecimal digits. Apple® iPad® - View MAC Address From a Home screen, navigate: Settings General About. View the MAC address (displays in the Wi-Fi Address field).

Using a private Wi-Fi address doesn't affect how you join or use most Wi-Fi networks. Connect to Wi-Fi as you normally do.

  • If your Wi-Fi router is configured to notify you whenever a new device joins the network, you will be notified when your device first joins with a private address.
  • If a network can't use a private address to provide parental controls or identify your device as authorized to join, you can stop using a private address with that network.
  • Rarely, a network might allow you to join with a private address, but won't allow internet access. If that happens, you can stop using a private address with that network.

Turn private address off or on for a network

You can stop or resume using a private address with any network. For better privacy, leave the setting on for all networks that support it.

iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Open the Settings app, then tap Wi-Fi.
  2. Tap the information button next to a network.
  3. Tap Private Address. If your device joined the network without using a private address, a privacy warning explains why.

How To Find Mac Address For Ipad

Last year I posted a popular article on How to spoof your MAC address on Mac OS X. The MAC address is the unique network hardware/device identifier that all networking hardware is embedded with. Among other things, it's what allows providers of free Wifi services (like airports) to restrict how much time you have on their network. Once your allotted time is used, you may find you can't get back onto their Wifi that day. That's because they recorded the MAC address of your device, and kept a record of how long you spent on their network. Many people come searching on best-mac-tips for a way to change the MAC address on their iOS device. Unfortunately I have not found a way to do this on iOS 7.x or iOS 6.x. It was possible on earlier versions of iOS, although it required jailbreaking the device. But since those versions are so old now, there seems little point in trying write up a guide for it. You can probably find them already. Version 8 of iOS introduced even greater MAC address security features. iOS 8 actually randomises your iPhone (iPad, and iPod Touch) MAC address so your activity is not so easily tracked across networks. Unfortunately, that means it's nearly impossible to cleanly (i.e. without major iOS/device issues) modify your MAC address. I spent a lot of time looking for an answer to this, and found nothing useful. Some folk suggest trying to issue the following command in an terminal app (on a jailbroken device):

The zeros would be replaced with whatever MAC address you wish to change it to. You would then reboot. But I see a lot of reports saying this can give very messy results, including not being able to access your device after the reboot because it will determine it has not been activated, etc. I do not recommend this at all. So, my best-mac-tip when it comes to spoofing your MAC address on an iOS device is simply that you can't. This lack of user control (i.e. customisation) is just one of the many reasons why I use Android phones and tablets. If your device is still running iOS 5, or perhaps 6, you may be able to find a guide online… so long as you are willing to break your device out of Apple Prison Central and jailbreak it. The good news is that iOS will reportedly randomise the device MAC address for privacy reasons. I suspect (just guessing) this will likely mean that Wifi services that block devices by MAC address will no longer be able to do that. Of course, this remains it remains to be seen just how this MAC randomisation feature will be implemented. You can read about this feature here: http://bit.ly/1lX6g4f
